With a plethora of books documenting the devastating events of the Holocaust, Tatiana de Rosnay’s novel Sarah’s Key, sheds new light on this dark time in history. Interweaving the lives of the two protagonists, the novel flips between Julia Jarmond an American journalist living in Paris and Sarah, a ten year-old Jewish girl who is forced from her Parisian home by French soldiers. Sarah’s life is devastated further, as before being taken she hides her four-year old brother in a cupboard promising to release him upon her return. As Julia researches the events surrounding the Velo d’Hiv round-up, her life becomes connected with that of Sarah’s. Impossible to put down, de Rosnay skillfully weaves together the two stories and brings attention to one of France’s most harrowing moments in history.
