As nature photography has shifted decisively towards digital in recent years, much has been written offering guidance and tips on technical matters, but there has been little published on the creative aspects. European Wildlife Photographer of the Year Chris Gomersall addresses this gap in a fresh and accessible guide, which takes account of developments in photography without dwelling on technical details. Ten thematic chapters on subjects such as Space, Light, Time and Developing a Narrative are generously packed with examples, advice and suggestions for projects and exercises. The second part of the book consists of sixteen case studies, where Gomersall describes how he achieved some of his most outstanding images. The large new audience for a guide such as this is evidenced in the growth of ecotourism and the uptake of digital cameras with excellent zoom facilities in recent years. The field has opened up to many more people as cameras are now largely automated and foolproof. The book will serve as an inspiration to these relative newcomers, as well as to more accomplished photographers who are technically assured but are looking to extend their creativity, to try fresh approaches and to learn from one of the masters.

CHRIS GOMERSALL has worked as a full-time, self-employed wildlife photographer since 1984, initially as staff photographer for the RSPB. The first British photographer to win the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year (2007), he is a Nikon UK training partner and runs tours and workshops throughout the year. He is the author of Photographing Wild Birds (David & Charles 2001), and was the principal photographer and picture editor on Mark Cocker and Richard Mabey's Birds Britannica (Chatto 2005). Chris lives in Potton, Bedfordshire.
