This meticulously researched and illustrated book is split into two sections, the first focusing on the history of the aircraft carrier, and the second of naval aircraft. The first part of the book chronicles the first ships to launch primitive aircraft, through to today's modern warships. The second half of the book explores the evolution of naval aircraft, from the days when biplanes were catapulted from converted destroyers through to the jet aircraft patrolling the world's seas today. Lavishly illustrated with over 1100 identification photographs, this unique book provides readers with key information about aircraft carriers and naval aviation from the early 20th century to today.

Bernard Ireland spent 30 years in ship research for the Admiralty in the Royal Naval Scientific Service. He has worked as an illustrator for the shipping industry, producing impressions and technical cutaways for companies such as Canadian Pacific and Blue Star Lines. He is the author of over 25 specialist naval books. Francis Crosby joined the Imperial War Museum's branch at Duxford, England in 1985. Having held research and exhibition posts at the museum, he then led Duxford's Marketing Department for many years, and he is now a marketing consultant specializing in museums and heritage attractions. His published works include: Fighter Aircraft; Bombers (both Lorenz Books); Images of War: D-Day; and Images of War: The Luftwaffe in World War II (both Pen and Sword).
