A practical guide to modern life and relationships. Julian Short explores rejection, family, professional and personal relationships, improving self-esteem and winning an argument, even when you lose. He arms us with the techniques and language to walk away from conflict feeling good about ourselves. To feel good we need to act well. We see ourselves in the mirror of other people's reactions and if we want to like the person we see, we need the skills to give and get as much love as we can. An Intelligent Life is designed to show that we can lose and still like ourselves, liberating us to be hopeless at things, but sensational as people.

Dr Julian Short graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1970 and was admitted as a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 1976. Julian's career has taken him all over the world; giving anaesthetics in England and Nepal, working in general practice and studying in a number of psychiatric hospitals. His wanderlust has led him through the Far and Middle East, Scandinavia, Europe, Russia and the US. His passion for the sea has taken him sailing in many places, including a break from medicine as cook and deck-hand on a yacht in the Atlantic. Julian returned to Australia in 1978 to work as a staff specialist in a teaching hospital, before entering private practice. He is now a consultant to three Sydney hospitals and works with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, providing psychiatric services to the far west of NSW. He is a member of a hospital ethics committee and is an educator with the Black Dog Institute; an internationally recognised centre for the treatment of depression. He specialises in the management of low self esteem and relationship problems.
