Spinning Wool : Beyond the Basics

An essential book for all spinners who want to get the best out of their craft. Spinning has changed hugely since its upsurge in popularity in the 1970s. These days spinners want to know more than just how to spin an adequate yarn: they want to extend the range of yarns they can produce, to understand what is happening as they spin, and about the raw materials they are working with. Part One covers what spinners need to know about wool and types of wool, analysis of a fleece, and how to store and prepare it for spinning. The chapter on wool types has been updated, with completely new samples and photographs. Part Two includes information on many of the new spinning wheels currently available. The yarn design section continues to provide thorough coverage with step-by-step instructions and photographs of the process of spinning yarns to a predetermined size and twist count, as well as detailed explanations of spinning methods, relating this information back to the properties of the chosen fleece. Anne Field has been spinning and weaving since 1962, and for the last 25 years has been teaching regularly in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. Her work has been entered in many exhibitions, both in New Zealand and overseas. As an international teacher, weaver, spinner and writer, her work has done much to promote New Zealand fibre craft abroad. Anne's published books include Weaving with the Rigid Heddle Loom (1980), The Four-shaft Table Loom (1986), The Ashford Book of Spinning (1986), The Ashford Book of Weaving (1991), Collapse Weave (2008) and Devore (2009). She has sold 67, 000 books. Anne has her studio in the Arts Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, where she works on her 16-shaft AVL, computer-assisted loom. The studio has weaving and pottery for sale and visitors are always welcome.
