He led the 8th Army to victory against Erwin Rommel and the Afrika Korps at El Alemein in 1942, in which the Australian 9th Division played an important part. Afterwards he commanded 21st Army Group from D. Day to V.E. Day, in North West Europe, 6 June 1944 - 8 May 1945.
