This is a rare book from the Berkelouw Rare Books Department.
London: William Heinemann, (1915). Sm. 4to. Orig. illust. cloth with each front cover depicting a sharp silver illust. image. Spines & front covers gilt titled. With frontispieces, 219 full-page plates of which 18 are col. and 9 folded, 3 folding maps in end-pocket of Vol. II, and text-maps. A very good crisp set showing only slight rubbing of the binding and occasional foxing. First Edition. Rare. NOTE: This account, so profusely illustrated by the magnificent photographs of Frank Hurley, is a classic of Polar literature, describing the first major scientific exploring venture by an Australian beyond their shores. Mawson's lone survival after the fatal tragedy of his two companions (Ninnis and Mertz) was to become the most extraordinary epic of survival in Antarctica. He was undoubtedly one of the most outstanding explorers of the 20th century and ranks high among our national icons. So much so that it is his portrait that adorns our original $100 bill.
