John Ogden, author and founder of Cyclops Press, will introduce Saltwater People of the Broken Bays.
Saltwater People of the Broken Bays tells the history of Sydney's northern beaches, the birthplace of Australian beach culture. The story begins with the surprising revelation that the Aboriginal clans who lived along this coast, the first Saltwater People, were not only adept at fishing and swimming, they also enjoyed the surf centuries before the Europeans "discovered" swimming and surfing, and all the while living sustainably. The Broken Bays also saw the genesis of commercial surfboard building and a fledgling surf media. Saltwater People of the Broken Bays celebrates the lives and achievements of many of the northern beaches' favourite sons and daughters but the main focus remains the headlands and beaches, the reefs and estuaries that bear witness to the timeless onslaught of the ocean.
