Writers Live - Meredith Burgmann introduces Dirty Secrets
5th Jun '14 @ Berkelouw Paddington

You are invited to meet Meredith Burgmann when she introduces Dirty Secrets - Our ASIO Files, a collection of reflections by numerous prominent Australians upon reading their ASIO files.

Writers from across the political spectrum including Mark Aarons, Phillip Adams, Nadia Wheatley, Michael Kirby, Peter Cundall, Gary Foley and Anne Summers, confront - and in some cases reclaim - their pasts as presented in the files of the state's security apparatus.

Reflecting on the interpretations, observations and proclamations that anonymous officials make about your personal life is not easy. Yet we see outrage mixed with humour, not least as ASIO officers got basic information wrong a lot of the time. Meredith Burgmann and those who were spied on have produced an extraordinary book where those being watched look right back.

Former Labor MLC, Meredith Burgmann, was radicalised at Sydney University by the Vietnam War and was one of the leaders of the Anti-Aparthied Movement, infamously receiving a two month gaol sentence for disrupting a Springbok match in 1971.

She joins us to introduce Dirty Secrets at 6.30pm on Thursday, June 5th, at Berkelouw Books in Paddington.

Bookings are essential and can be made by calling 9360 3200 or by email to: paddington@berkelouw.com.au.
