Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12, 1817, in Concord, MA to Cynthia Dunbar and John Thoreau, a pencil manufacturer. He was educated in public and private schools in Concord and then attended what was then known as Harvard College. His attendance at Harvard was briefly suspended, reportedly due to illness (presumably the tuberculosis that would eventually end his life), but he managed to graduate in 1837. At the time, the career path for Harvard graduates was considerably narrower than for modern students. There were only four paths: medicine, the law, the ministry, or education. Finding himself ill-suited for the first three, Thoreau, whom by graduation had reversed the order of his given first and middle names, tried his hand at education.
