London: Printed for the Author by John and Paul Knapton 1748. Thick 4to. Orig. full calf (rebacked). Spine extra gilt and with raised bands. (vi 12 4 xii 418pp.). With folding engrv. chart showing the track of the Centurion round the World 42 folding engraved maps and charts plus the 2pp. single leaf 'Directions to the Bookbinder' for placing the plates. Includes List of Subscribers. Some occasional foxing/soiling along fore-edge but overall an excellent complete copy of the rare First Edition with pp. 319 misnumbered. Armorial bookplate inside front cover. NOTE: This is the official account of Anson's Voyage of 1740-44 holding a unique but terrible place in British maritime history. Despite its success in terms of ships plundered and treasure captured (some œ400000 sterling) some 1000 men lost their lives. Anson's account was the epitome of adventure and descriptive travel and remained the most popular work of the eighteenth century. Hill pp. 317-8; Sabin 1625.
