Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

This adorable adventure, full of linguistic fun, will absolutely charm your socks off (and probably your shoes too)!
Princesses Rhyme and Reason have been banished from the Kingdom of Wisdom. Milo, with the help of his watchdog Tock, the loveable but bumbling bug Humbug and a host of other fabulous characters, must travel beyond Expectations and through Dictionopolis and Digitopolis to rescue the Princesses from the Castle in the Air. Along the way they encounter all sorts of interesting and amusing people and situations. They watch a symphony of colour. They eat their own words at a banquet. They take an unexpected jump to the Island of Conclusions. They meet a Dirty Bird who lives outside of Context and steals their words.
Add some gorgeous illustrations and how could you not love this book?!
P.S. Particularly perfect for fans of Diana Wynne Jones and anyone who loves a good pun.
