John Ogden Book Launch and Reading: Woke - The Shibboleth Trilogy Volume 1
1st Mar @ Berkelouw Mona Vale
You are invited to the launch of John Ogden's new novel Woke, to be followed by an author reading.
Local author John Ogden is perhaps best known as the author and publisher of Saltwater People of the Broken Bays, but there is a lot more to his story. Come and hear Gillian dig out some of the back story behind his debut novel.
Just before dawn on the first day of summer, 1948, the body of a man is found slumped against a seawall on quiet Somerton Beach, near Adelaide in South Australia. The unidentified victim has been poisoned, and there is speculation that the man was a Soviet agent sent to spy on a top-secret site being set up in Woomera in the South Australian desert.
In a callous act that abruptly ends over 60,000 years of relative isolation, aboriginal people from the Western Desert have been forcibly removed from their homelands to make way for the testing of nuclear bombs and long-range weapons systems. The remote deserts that have preserved and protected the planet's longest, continuous culture was now controlled by forces intent on developing weapons of mass destruction.
Will Oakley's erratic journey through life would be shaped by the conjunction of these vastly different worlds. Exiled by politics and conflict, he would wander the planet, receiving and eclectic and at times intense education about life and death, before stumbling onto a startling truth - a truth within sight at the starting point of his journey.
