passenger car steam tram car horse tramcar etc. from the collection of one Henry Coathup Mais. The collection as itemised are the manufacturers depiction of various original rolling stock with each photograph in generally equal condition showing some brownish sepia that comes with age. They are individually mounted on heavy board some bearing the printed caption of the manufacturer others with relevant ms notes some with the name of the photographer and often with the autograph of H.C. Mais 1875 to 1878. The photographs themselves would in all cases have been earlier. H.C. Mais on retiring from the Great Western Railway under I.K. Brunel became a consulting engineer for steam locomotive builders in the U.K. particularly Beyer Peacock and collected a large number of photographs of locomotives in many parts of the world. He migrated to Australia to become Manager of the Melbourne Railway Co. in the 1860's. He later moved to the Public Works Department in South Australia. On retirement he passed his photograph collection to N. Kernot Professor of Engineering at the University of Melbourne who together with brother F. Kernot construction engineer for the VR built bridges and viaducts. Prof. Kernot had devised the means of calculating the weight of counter weights for locomotive driving wheels and used the photographs to illustrate lectures in mechanical engineering.
