London: A. Maxwell 1813. Quarto uncut in original papered boards (some losses to papering on lower front and rear corners) with paper title-label to spine. Preserved in a folding brown quarter calf box. (xvi 516pp.). Notwithstanding some occasional foxing and a little worming in the gutter of the first few gatherings this is a very good copy in its original as issued state. During a voyage on board the merchantman Barwell to China in 1799 the Author first officer on board that ship along with Mr. John Buyers the first officer came to the belief that the Americans were "[carrying] on a most lucrative trade to the north-west of that vast continent." (p. 1) Upon their return to England Turnbull and Buyers purchased and fitted out the Margaret and having obtained the permission of the East India Company set off on their mission to partake in that lucrative trade. This is the second revised and much expanded edition (the first edition appeared in 1805) more desirable for the extra material on New South Wales; the addition of the narrative of Baudin's voyage of discovery on board the Geographe and Naturaliste; and the appendix which includes an account of New Zealand the destruction of the ship Boyd and a description of the Fijian Islands (Ferguson I 570). Other chapters have also been revised and expanded in light of developments in the intervening period. "As the first work to record Australia from a commercial point of view and as a key work in the promotion of Australia as a field for emigration and trade it makes a valuable addition to any collection." (Wantrup 1987 p. 117) .
