NOTE: In 1914 hundreds of Australian clergymen enlisted enthusiastically in the A.I.F. as chaplains but the reality of war shattered their hopes of expected religious renewal and reforms. Faced with failure clergymen became increasingly bitter and divisive channelling their frustrations into rancorous sectarian outbursts.
