Spines uniformly gilt and with raised bands. Top edges gilt. Complete with 8 fold. engrv. maps 26 engraved plates numerous text-illusts. and errata-page. 1st edition. A neat old rubber stamp (illegible) on page 1 of each volume otherwise fine and complete. F. 4406. NOTE: In 1837 Stokes went out as Lieutenant under Commander Wickham for surveying the coasts of Australia in Darwin's old vessel the Beagle. In 1841 the Commander was invalided home and Stokes succeeded to his post. Most of the surveying took place along the North Coast the Gulf of Carpentaria and at the Swan River. Sydney Bass Strait etc. were also visited.
