With 40 illustrations by H. K. Brown including the first published example of a dark plate on pp. 547. The plate on pp. 238 has been rebound next to pp. 368. Pp. 239/340 have been rebound in-between pp. 368/369. Foxing on vignette and half title-page. Front hinge cracked. Overall a good complete copy of this 1st edition copy. NOTE: Originally published in 19 monthly instalments between 1846 and 1848 this story deals with the fortunes of the owner of a shipping firm and his relationship with his children.
