A rare offering of ground-breaking treatises by the distinguished pioneer socialist, Robert Owen (1771-1858). He acquired New Lanarch textile mills at Manchester together with partners William Allen and Jeremy Bentham, where he initiated a program of amelioration in conditions of the workers, especially stopping employment of children. He established sickness and old-age insurance, and opened educational and recreational facilities. He was instrumental in drafting the Factory Act of 1819, emasculated in the House of Commons.
