NOTE: Frederick Sleigh Roberts first Earl Roberts of Kandahar Pretoria and Waterford (1832-1914) was an outstanding British Officer during the Victorian era. In 1858 he won the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny. He gained fame as a Major-General during the Second Afghan War of 1878-1880 with his march from Kabul to the relief of Kandahar. In 1900 he was commander-in-chief of British forces in the South African War where he captured the Boer's capitals of Bloemfontein and Pretoria.
