Carolus David Ilgen...Published Halis Saxonum (Halle Germany): e Libraria Hemmerdeana 1796. 8vo. Rebacked full leather. Embossed spine with gilt and morocco titling label. Text block has been speckled. (xxxvi 676pp.). Bookplate on front paste-down. Ex Libris Mure of Caldwell. Address written in pen on front endpaper. Some pencil annotations otherwise excellent copy. NOTE: Composed for recitation at festivals between 800 and 400 B.C. a collection of 33 hymns written in heroic hexameters in honour of the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greek pantheon. Accompanied by epigrams and the comic epic Batrachomyomachia (The Battle of Frogs and Mice). Connected with Homer's name the hymns are today not to be believed to be written by the author of the `Iliad and `'the Odyssey.' Translated by Ilgen Karly David; Prodromus Theodore; Galeomyomachia and Zeno Demetrius. Previous owner William Mure became the Baron of the Scots Exchequer (1718-1776) and friend of philosopher David Hume. An interesting association copy.
