Volume one comprises a frontispiece plus an additional ten full-page plates (five of which are coloured) a number of in-text illustrations and two maps preserved in a cloth pocket affixed to the inside of the rear board. Volume two boasts a coloured frontispiece ten full-page black and white plates plus in-text illustrations. There are natural history appendices at the end of volume two by John Gould (on birds) John Edward Gray (on mammals reptiles and amphibians) and Adam White (on insects). The plates in both volumes are a little foxed; this is nonetheless a fine set of the first edition.
