NOTE: Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976) Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of El Alamein was the most famous British general of World War Two. He led the 8th Army to victory against Erwin Rommel and the Afrika Korps at El Alamein in 1942 in which the Australian 9th Division played an important part. Afterwards he commanded 21st Army Group from D. Day to V.E. Day in North West Europe 6 June 1944 - 8 May 1945.
