Tinted lithographed frontispiece by Day and Haghe (lithographers appointed to Queen Victoria), four engraved plates and folding-map of author??s route with British Army in Cabul. Previous owner??s bookplate, D.B. Ebsworth, on inside front cover. Prelim. pages and end-pages foxed. heavier at beginning. Hinge cracked, otherwise a very good copy. NOTE: Lieutenant Joseph Greenwood's was a captain of the Imperial Army who went on to have a distinguished career under General Pollock. This book recounts his experiences with General Pollock's ??Army of Retribution' in the 1st Anglo-Afghan War?? which set out to avenge the massacre of the British force retreating from Kabul to Jellalabad in which many soldiers and civlians died or became prisoners. They were successfull in recovering prisoners. Lieutenant Joseph Greenwood went on to move to New Zealand and became a member of Parliament.
