London: Jacobum Allestry 1668. Sm. 4to. Contemp. full vellum (rebacked). (xx 310 34pp.). With 8 engrv. plates (mostly birds) mainly folded and some text-illusts. Several of the plates repaired where previously torn. Fore-edges of prelims thumbed/chipped some toning of the text otherwise fine and complete. 1st edition. NOTE: A list giving the Latin and Greek and sometimes English names of all the animals known at that time with brief descriptions. It contains also an anatomical description of the dissection of two fishes done by Charleton and a general description of fossils. The British Museum Catalogue (Nat. Hist.) calls for 7 plates; 8 are present in this copy. Charleton (1619-1707) served as Royal Physician to Charles I and II was one of the first elected fellows of the Royal Society President of the College of Physicians and extensive writer on medicine.
