NOTE: Much attention is paid in these reports to the efficacy of the Separate System as a method of punishment. These prisoners were often referred to as "exiles" when they reached Australia. Many letters from "exiles" in Australia to their friends in England are printed. Pentonville played an important part in the penal history of Australia.
