Ferguson (3886) says "The whole report is very valuable with reference to penal discipline in England & Australia" and he draws attention to Lord Stanley's two despatches on pp.26-33 which are present. THIRD REPORT: London 1845. (X32pp.). Not in Ferguson. FIFTH REPORT: London 1847. (56pp.). Top of title-page missing. Not in Ferguson. SIXTH REPORT: London 1848. (58pp.). Not in Ferguson. Four reports are in one volume. Large 4to. Or. full old ledger cf. Spine extremities worn corners rubbed. NOTE: Much attention is paid in these reports to the efficacy of the Separate System as a method of punishment. These prisoners were often referred to as "exiles" when they reached Australia. Many letters from "exiles" in Australia to their friends in England are printed. Pentonville played an important part in the penal history of Australia.
