With 100 engraved and 24 woodbury-type portraits and views. Title-pages printed in red/black ink. De Luxe edition limited to 60 numbered and signed copies only. Uncut. NOTE: John Evelyn (1620-1706). The Diary which covers the whole of his long life describes the life of a 17th century gentleman keenly interested in science and the arts and is full of brilliant portraits of his contemporaries. He lived through the reigns of Charles I Cromwell Charles II James II and William III-the most stirring and decisive years of modern English history. He was the Horace Walpole of that age his careful description of persons places buildings and works of art give his Diary great historical value.
