London: Macmillan and Co. 1927. 4to. Original quarter vellum over patterned paper boards (corners rubbed). Gilt title on spines. Edges uncut. Frontispiece portrait of Thomas Hardy in Volume I. Limited edition of 525 large paper copies signed by Thomas Hardy. Some light foxing on the end-papers otherwise a fine set. NOTE: Initially published in three separate parts in 1904 1906 and 1908 Thomas Hardy subtitled this work 'an epic-drama of the war with Napoleon'. Hardy drew on war stories from the Napoleonic wars and extensive research for this epic work.
