NOTE: Charles George Gordon (1833-1885) was a famous British Officer who was killed at Kartoum in the Sudan in late January 1885 after a long siege by the Mahdi. Before Kartoum fell Gordon managed to send his journals covering the period Sept. 10th to Dec. 14th 1884 down the Nile and thus into publication.
