Adorned under the fore-edge gilt of each volume is a particularly fine painting: depicted on Vol. 1 is Noah's Ark showing Noah his family and many pairs of animals making their way on board the vessel; on Vol. 2 is The Deluge in which humans and animals are trying to escape raging torrents of water.
