Brown's substantial and beautiful Self-Interpreting Bible was first published in 1778. Designed for popular use it remained in print for over a century. As noted in the Oxford DNB (2004) Brown's Bible was "as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress [...]."
