Marbled edges and matching endpapers. With engrv. portrait. Occasional foxing. NOTE: The Rev. Sydney Smith (1771-1845) was the celebrated English essayist and wit who started the Edinburgh Review, to which he contributed numerous articles including reviews on Australian subjects on Botany Bay, Prisons, Letter to Viscount Sidmouth on Transportation, etc. Whilst Ferguson (see Nos. 15856-15860) lists Smith's Works, the earliest edition cited is that of 1854. Scarce.
