Paris: Chez L. Tenr??, 1834-1835. Two quarto volumes bound in quarter morocco over original marbled boards (re-cased). Uniformly gilt spines with raised bands. (Vol. I: iv, viii, 576pp.; Vol. II: iv, 584pp.). With 2 engraved frontispieces featuring notable navigators, title-vignettes, 142 full-page plates, 6 folding engraved maps, and 13 woodcut in-text illustrations. French-language text printed in double-column. Some slight foxing, but nonetheless a very good set, entirely complete. French navigator Jules Dumont D'Urville's (1790-1842) popular two-volume literary journey round the world summarising the great voyages of discovery to the Pacific from Magellan in the early 16th century to his own time. The work is adorned with maps and engravings after drawings by the artist Sainson, who accompanied D'Urville on his voyage to the Pacific aboard the Astrolabe in the years 1826-1829, during which the coastline of New Zealand was surveyed (see Item 17). Australia and New Zealand are treated in detail in Volume II. D'Urville's Voyage pittoresque was subsequently translated into German, Russian, Italian, Danish, Dutch, and Spanish. In 1837-1840, D'Urville embarked on his second voyage on board the Astrolabe, in which he made his momentous attempt on the South Pole (see Item 18).
