London: Tinsley Brothers 1872. Royal octavo bound in contemporary half red calf with buckram boards. Marbled endpapers. Spines gilt and with raised bands. Top edge gilt and other edges uncut. With a folding map 4 full-page plans and 11 engraved plates. First edition. Zanzibar served as a base for the great journeys of exploration into Africa of the nineteenth century. Burton and John Hanning Speke set off from Zanzibar in 1857 on their expedition to the Great Lakes also with the hope of discovering the source of the River Nile. This is a first edition of a most significant book on East Africa.
