NOTE: In the early 17th century the Prince-Bishop of Eichstaff, Germany, created a splendid garden and he commissioned a monumental picture book of the plants, published in 1613 by botanist-apothecary Basilius Besler. A few copies were hand-coloured, and many of these rare examples are reproduced in this beautifully printed and carefully researched book.
